History

Like all good stories there are many versions of how this cocktail was created.

Daniel Negrete is said to have created the drink in 1936 when he was the manager of a hotel in Mexico. His girlfriend, Margarita, apparently liked salt in her drinks and he created the drink for her as a present. 

Another story credits Carlos Herrera with creating the cocktail at his Mexican restaurant in 1938. The customer Marjorie King was allergic to many spirits, but not to tequila, however she didn’t like to drink it straight. Herrera supposedly solve the problem by adding salt and lime and creating the world’s first margarita.

According to cocktail historian David Wondrich, author of  Imbibe, the margarita evolved from a cocktail known as the Daisy, a popular drink served in the 1930s and 40s. It was a mix of alcohol, citrus and grenadine, served over shaved ice. There were gin daisies and whiskey daisies and tequila daisies. At some point, this Mexican-influenced daisy became known as margarita, which means daisy in Spanish.

How to make a Margarita

You will need:
50 ml tequila 100% agave
20 ml triple sec
15 ml freshly squeezed lime juice
Salt

Rub the rim of the glass with lime slice to make the salt stick to it. Shake the other ingredients with ice, then carefully pour into the glass (taking care not to dislodge any salt). Garnish with fresh lime and service with a DrinksPlinks M.

Variations On The Classic

There are a number of versions of the classic cocktail which have been popular over the years. Sweet , fruity, frozen and spicy are the most common variations. We love a frozen strawberry margarita at a swim up bar at a luxury resort!

Spicy margaritas have garnered legions of fans around the world. They key to a spicy marg’s heat is fresh jalapenos, which are muddled in the cocktail shaker before adding the other traditional ingredients and shaking. Two coins of jalapeno, with the seeds removed will give some moderate heat to your cockail. Add more coins to increase the fire. Garnish with fresh lime, another coin of jalapeno and some chilli and lime salt on the glass.
